About Us

A controversial planning application to develop a small plot of land – in a high-profile location near Chudleigh’s war memorial – was on the agenda at the Town Council’s planning meeting on 5th August 2015. There was an overwhelming response of objection to the plans from the public in attendance.

The proposed development seeks to bulldoze gardens and a small commercial unit and replace them with seven three-storey dwellings and a retail unit on The Square at the heart of the town.

Our main concerns are that the development is not in keeping with the conservation area in which it would be built, and that it would spoil the character of the town.

Chudleigh does not have many green spaces and to lose this green space, and the open aspects and views it affords in the centre of town, would have a big impact on the spirit of the place.

Everyone felt strongly that something needed to be done to protect Chudleigh, and a small group of residents got together outside the meeting to think of the best way forward.

We have met a couple of times so far, consolidating our enthusiasm for raising awareness and spreading information on how to object to the current planning application.

We are also keen to encourage the Town Council to explore the possibility of buying the plot on behalf of the town, thus protecting the historic character of Chudleigh and preserving the green space for all to enjoy.

By pooling our resources, people can now get their views heard through various forms of online media .. our Chudleigh Protest website, Facebook and Twitter, as well as traditional means of getting our message ‘out there’ via banners, posters and leaflets.

Many hands make light work, so if you are able to offer any help with leaflet distribution then we would really appreciate it. We plan to maintain momentum through ChudleighProtest.org, showing that Chudleigh has a voice, cares about its heritage, and its future!

We really welcome fresh ideas, so please use the contact page or email link to get in touch and let us know if we are missing something.

Thank you.

P.S. Chudleigh Town Council will be holding a Full Council Meeting at 7pm on Monday 7th September 2015 in the Town Hall and this item will be on the agenda. You can attend this meeting as a member of the public. A report about progress to date (with regard to the application) will be provided by the Chairman.

We hope that as many people as possible will attend to show their objection to the proposed development.
